Rope caulk, V-seal or film: three ways to seal a window
They are not competitors so much as three answers to three different questions about whether the window has to open.

Use a V-strip if the window must still open. Use rope caulk if it can stay shut for the season and the gaps are irregular. Use shrink film if the window can stay shut and you want the biggest effect for the money. Film insulates the whole window; the other two only close the gaps. V-strip: the only one that lets the window work
A V-strip is a folded plastic tension seal fitted into the sash channel and along the meeting rail. The sash slides past it and the strip springs back, so the window opens and closes normally all winter. Nothing else here does that.
The limits are reach and surface. A V-strip spans a small gap only, and its adhesive needs a clean, sound, painted surface — which excludes a lot of genuinely old sash. Where it works, it is invisible and lasts several seasons.
Rope caulk: the one that fits an irregular gap
Old wooden windows do not have a gap. They have a gap that changes width every six inches, because the frame has moved and the sash has swelled and shrunk for eighty years. No rigid section can follow that. Rope caulk can, because you press it in with your thumb and it takes the shape of whatever is there. Which cord to buy, and how much, is ranked in best rope caulk.
It seals the window shut and it is genuinely removable in spring, which is a rare combination and the reason it survives in a market full of newer products. Take it out before the summer heat — left in through July it gets much harder to lift cleanly.
Film: the one with the biggest effect
Film does something categorically different: rather than closing an air path, it adds an insulating layer across the entire window. On a single-pane window that is a much bigger change than sealing the sash, because the glass itself is the weak point, not just the joints.
Pick this if
- The window is your bedroom egress, or over a stove, or in a bathroom — V-strip. Nothing that seals a window shut belongs there.
- The window is an old wooden double-hung you will not miss until spring — rope caulk, and film over the top if the room is genuinely cold.
- The window is single-pane and the room is the coldest in the house — film first. It is the biggest single change available.
- The window is a modern sealed double-glazed unit — sealing the sash is worth doing and film mostly is not; the still-air layer is already there.

Where the number comes fromM-D publishes the strip width (3/8 in) and the roll length (17 ft), not a gap range. Our reasoning, stated as reasoning: a V-strip is folded along its crease and stands off roughly half its flat width, so a 3/8 in strip suits a hairline gap up to somewhere around 1/8 in. Past that it stops making contact and you want a bulb or D-section instead.

- Is rope caulk better than weather stripping?
- On an old window with an irregular gap, yes, because it deforms to fit and comes out cleanly. On a window you need to open, no — rope caulk seals it shut. They solve different problems.
- Can I use rope caulk and window film together?
- Yes, and it is the best result available on an old single-pane window. Seal the sash gaps with rope caulk, then film over the whole window to add the still-air layer.
- Does rope caulk damage paint?
- Not usually if you remove it in spring. Left in through the summer heat it can bond harder and pull at flaking paint. Take it out before the weather turns hot.
- Which is cheapest?
- Rope caulk, per window, by a wide margin — one 90-foot cord does a house of windows. Film is the most cost-effective by effect, since it changes the window's insulation rather than just its air leakage.
