The best weather stripping tape for windows
The alternative to film, for the windows you cannot seal shut. Sized against the gap in the sash, not against the shelf price.

For a window you still need to open, use a V-strip in the sash channel and a D-section on the frame the sash closes against. For a window that can stay shut all winter, rope caulk seals better than either and peels out in spring. Match the published thickness to the gap you measured — roughly half to all of the seal's thickness.
Shrink film beats tape on raw performance, and it seals the window shut. That is the trade. This page is for every window where sealing it shut is not acceptable: bedrooms with egress requirements, kitchens, bathrooms, and anywhere you want to air the room in February.
Where the air actually gets in on a double-hung window
- The meeting rail — where the top and bottom sashes overlap in the middle. The single biggest leak on most old double-hungs.
- The sash channels — the vertical grooves the sash slides in. These need a V-strip, not tape.
- The bottom rail against the sill — where the lower sash sits down.
- The frame-to-wall joint — not a weatherstrip job at all. That is caulk, and it is often the biggest leak of the four.
Match the part to your gap
Measure at the widest point. Then read across. If your measurement sits on a boundary, take the larger band — a seal that is slightly too big compresses, and one that is too small does nothing at all.

What we would skip, and why
Nobody in this category ever declines to recommend something. That is what makes universal praise worth ignoring. Here is what we would not buy.
Foam tape in a sash channel on a window you use
Foam tape squashed by a sliding sash lasts about a month before it is torn, rolled up and useless — and it makes the window stiff in the meantime. Sash channels want a V-strip, which is designed to be slid past. Foam belongs on a surface the sash closes *onto*, not one it slides against.
Silicone caulk on a window you will ever open
Every winter somebody caulks a double-hung shut and every spring somebody attacks it with a knife and damages the sash. If the window needs to stay closed only for the season, rope caulk does the same job and peels out. Save the permanent caulk for the joint between the frame and the wall, which genuinely should never move.
Any tape applied below about 50 F
Pressure-sensitive adhesive needs warmth to bond. Applied on a cold day it appears to stick and lets go within a week — and people blame the tape. Warm the room, warm the frame, then apply.

- Separate what goes in a moving sash channel from what goes on a fixed closing surface, because the two fail differently.
- Prefer genuinely removable options for windows the reader still needs to open.

Rope caulk is the underrated one
Rope caulk — caulking cord, sold as Mortite among others — is a pliable putty rope you press into a gap with your fingers. No tools, no cure time, no adhesive to fail, and it comes out in one piece in spring. On old wooden double-hungs it seals better than any tape because it deforms to a gap that changes width along its length, which is exactly what an old sash does.
Two cautions. Left in through a hot summer it gets harder to remove cleanly, so take it out in spring. And it seals the window shut, so treat it like film: not on an egress window, not in a kitchen. Compared side by side with the alternatives in rope caulk versus V-seal versus film.

- Should I use rope caulk or foam tape on a double-hung window?
- Rope caulk if the window can stay shut for the season — it deforms to an irregular old sash and peels out cleanly in spring. Foam tape or a D-section if you need the window to open, and a V-strip in the sash channels themselves, which are the one place tape will not survive.
- How do I stop a draft coming through a window without replacing it?
- Check and tighten the sash lock, seal the meeting rail and sash channels with a V-strip, seal the sill with a D-section, and caulk the frame-to-wall joint. If the window can stay shut, add film or rope caulk on top of that.
- What is the best weather sealing tape for windows?
- For a fixed closing surface, a hollow EPDM D-section published at 1/4 inch thick — it seals a measured gap of an eighth to a quarter inch and stays flexible when cold. For a sliding sash channel, a V-strip instead, because tape will not survive being slid across.
- Can I put weather stripping on the glass?
- No. Weatherstrip goes on the frame and sash surfaces. Anything on the glass is either a film kit, which covers the whole pane, or a mistake.
