Foam, V-seal or silicone: which weather stripping your door needs
Three materials, three different gap bands. Choosing by price is why so much weather stripping ends up in the trash by spring.

Use a V-strip for a hairline or uneven gap, EPDM or silicone bulb seal for a gap of an eighth to a quarter inch, and thick open-cell foam only for a large indoor gap you cannot seal any other way. Foam is the cheapest and the shortest-lived; silicone costs most and survives the coldest.

V-strip: tension, not compression
A V-strip is a length of springy plastic folded down the middle. You stick one wing to the jamb and leave the other standing proud, so when the door closes it presses the V shut and the strip pushes back. That tension is why it keeps sealing as the door settles on its hinges across a season — nothing has to stay squashed to the same thickness.
The limitation is reach. A V-strip only spans the gap its open height covers, which on a half-inch strip is small. Past about 3/16 of an inch the strip stops touching and the door closes on nothing. That is the moment to move to a bulb seal.
Foam tape: cheap, and honest about being cheap
Open-cell foam tape works by being squashed. It fills irregular gaps well because it deforms to whatever shape it meets, which is genuinely useful on a warped frame. What it does not do is come back: after a season of being compressed it stays compressed, and the seal it was making disappears without any visible sign that anything changed.
It also absorbs water unless it has a facing. Outdoors, that means it freezes, which is the end of it. Indoors — a basement door, an attic hatch, a garage-access door — foam tape is a perfectly reasonable choice and the cheapest fix in this whole category.
Bulb seals: the ones that survive a winter
A hollow bulb — the D-section — compresses like foam but rebounds like a spring, because it is a rubber tube rather than a sponge. EPDM is the standard material and stays flexible through a hard freeze. Silicone costs more and does the same job further down the thermometer, plus it does not chalk in strong sunlight.
Pick this if
- Your gap is a hairline and the door already almost closes on the stop — V-strip. Nothing else disappears as completely.
- Your gap measures an eighth to a quarter inch and you get real winters — EPDM D-section, or silicone if you want the best of it.
- Your frame is warped and the gap changes along its length — thick open-cell foam indoors, or rope caulk if the door is not in daily use.
- You are sealing an interior door on a budget — foam tape, and accept you will redo it in a couple of years.

Questions people actually ask
- Is silicone weather stripping worth the extra money?
- In a cold climate, yes: it stays flexible when EPDM is stiffening and vinyl has given up, and it does not degrade in strong sun. In a mild climate the EPDM D-section does the same job for less.
- Can I use foam tape on an exterior door?
- You can, and it will work for a season. Open-cell foam absorbs water, freezes and takes a permanent compression set, so plan on replacing it annually. A bulb seal costs a little more and lasts several times as long.
- How do I install V-seal weather stripping?
- Fold along the crease, peel the backing progressively rather than all at once, and stick the wing to the jamb so the open side faces the direction the door closes from. Do not stretch it — a stretched strip pulls off the corners. Cut at each corner rather than bending it around.
- Which weather stripping lasts the longest?
- Silicone, then EPDM rubber, then vinyl, then open-cell foam. That order holds in every climate; the gap between them widens the colder it gets.
