Draft fixes for renters that leave no trace
Nothing drilled, nothing permanent, nothing that takes paint with it. The list is shorter than the internet suggests, and it works.
The four renter-safe fixes are rope caulk in window gaps, a slide-under draft stopper at doors, shrink film on windows you do not need to open, and V-strip where the surface is sound paint. Everything else in the category either drills or leaves adhesive. Test any tape on a hidden corner before committing.
Rented homes are often the ones that need this most: older stock, single glazing, and no incentive for anyone to fix it. The good news is that the highest-value fixes in this whole category — rope caulk and shrink film — are both temporary by design.
Rope caulk: the renter's best tool
Caulking cord is putty in a rope. You press it into the gap with your fingers, it seals, and in spring you peel it out in one piece. No adhesive, no residue, no tools, no cure time. On an old painted sash it is the only sealing product here that carries essentially no risk to the paint.

- Take it out before summer — left through the heat it bonds harder and can lift flaking paint.

- It seals the window shut, so leave your bedroom egress window alone.
Draft stoppers: the door answer with no screws
You cannot fit a screw-on sweep to a rented door. A slide-under stopper attaches to nothing at all: it sits under the door, seals both faces if it is a twin design, and travels with the door as it opens. Check your gap is at least half an inch or it will drag. Full list in best door draft stoppers.
Shrink film: removable, with one caution
Film is the single most effective thing you can do to a cold single-pane window, and it comes off in spring. The caution is the mounting tape: on soft, old or badly-prepared paint it can lift a flake when you pull it. Two things make this manageable.
- 1Test a 3-inch length of the tape in a bottom corner. Leave it a day, then pull it slowly at a shallow angle and look at what came with it.
- 2When removing at the end of the season, warm the tape with a hair dryer first. Softened adhesive releases instead of tearing.
- 3Pull slowly and at a shallow angle, back along the tape, never straight out from the frame.

V-strip folds into the gap and springs back, so it seals a jamb that never closes to exactly the same place twice.

The order to do it in
- 1Doors first: a stopper under the front door and any door onto a cold hallway. Immediate, and completely reversible.
- 2Window locks next. Tightening a sash lock is free and it is often the biggest single gap in an old apartment.
- 3Rope caulk the window sashes in the rooms you actually sit in.
- 4Film the coldest window last, once you know the rest is done.

Questions people actually ask
- How can I seal windows for winter if I rent?
- Rope caulk in the sash gaps and shrink film over the window are both removable in spring. Tighten the sash lock first, since it is free. Avoid permanent caulk and anything that needs a drill.
- Will window film damage rental paint?
- It can on soft or old paint. Test the tape in a bottom corner first, warm it with a hair dryer before removing, and pull slowly at a shallow angle. Photograph the frames before you start either way.
- What can I do about a drafty door in a rental?
- A slide-under draft stopper attaches to nothing and comes out with you. If the door face is smooth, clean and fully cured, an adhesive silicone sweep seals better — but test the adhesive on a small area first.
- Can I ask my landlord to fix drafts?
- Yes, and in many places drafts severe enough to make a room hard to heat fall under habitability rules. Document with photos and dates. In the meantime the fixes on this page are cheap, fast and entirely reversible.
