The best door sweeps for keeping mice out

Closing the gap to a quarter inch is the first half of the job. The half nobody mentions is what happens when the mouse decides to chew.

Two mice on a wooden floor beside a baseboard inside a house

Mice can enter through openings as small as 1/4 inch, so any door gap at or above that is an entry point rather than just a draft. Fit a sweep with a metal carrier and a seal that compresses fully against the threshold, then fill the two bottom corners, which is where sweeps leave gaps.

There is a number that decides this entire page, and it comes from the University of California's Integrated Pest Management program rather than from us: mice can enter through openings as small as 1/4 inch. UC IPM's guidance on the house mouse is blunt about the consequence — ensure all doors, windows and screens fit tightly.

That single figure reframes the gap under your door. At 1/2 inch it is not a draft that also happens to let mice in. It is a doorway that also happens to let cold in.

The part most guides leave out

Closing the gap to under a quarter inch sounds like the whole job. It is not, and this is where almost every article on this topic stops. UC IPM's companion guidance notes that openings larger than 1/4 inch should be sealed because mice will gnaw to enlarge them to gain entry.

So the seal is not a passive barrier being measured against a fixed animal. It is a barrier being actively worked on by something with incisors. A vinyl blade that closes a 1/2 inch gap to nothing has solved the geometry and left the material problem completely untouched.

Measure first — the threshold is the whole decision

  1. 1Close the door and get your eye down to floor level on the inside.
  2. 2Measure the gap at the latch side, the middle and the hinge side. Take the largest reading.
  3. 3Compare it to 1/4 inch. At or above, treat this as an exclusion job and read on. Below it, you have a draft problem and best door sweeps is the better page for you.
  4. 4Now look at the two bottom corners specifically, where the door meets the frame. Almost every sweep leaves a small triangular gap there, and that gap is frequently over a quarter inch even when the middle of the door is sealed.
  5. 5If you are not sure what your reading means, how to measure a door gap has the index-card method for anything too small for a tape measure.

Match the part to your gap

Measure at the widest point. Then read across. If your measurement sits on a boundary, take the larger band — a seal that is slightly too big compresses, and one that is too small does nothing at all.

Decide the material before you decide the brand

There are two honest routes here and they cost very different amounts.

Two routes to the same outcome
RouteWhat you getWhat it costsHonest limitation
Purpose-built rodent sweepA metal frame and a seal cored with steel wool fill fabricSeveral times a plain sweepStill seals only the bottom; corners are a separate job
Good draft sweep plus corner fillMetal carrier, dense rubber blade, steel wool pushed into the cornersRoughly the price of a sweep plus a small kitThe blade itself remains chewable, so inspect it seasonally
Draft sweep aloneThe gap closed, nothing gnaw-resistant anywhereCheapestSolves the geometry only. Fine if you have never seen a mouse

Xcluder, which makes the purpose-built option, states the case against the cheap route plainly on its own site: standard vinyl or rubber door sweeps fail because rodents can easily chew through them. That is a manufacturer describing why you should buy its product, so treat it as the interested claim it is — but it agrees with the UC IPM point about gnawing, and the two together are the reason this page exists.

A metal-framed sweep whose seal is cored with steel wool fill fabric — the only pick here built for gnawing rather than just for draft.

Where the number comes fromXcluder publishes the construction (a weather seal lined with its fill fabric) rather than a numeric working gap range. Treat it like any face-mount sweep: it closes the gap the carrier can be dropped into. Sizes are sold by door width, so measure the door, not the gap, when choosing length.

What it does well

  • The seal is cored with steel wool, which is the material the exclusion guidance actually names
  • Metal frame, so the carrier itself is not a chew target
  • Does the draft job and the exclusion job with one part

Where it fails

  • Costs several times what a plain aluminum-and-rubber sweep costs
  • "Impenetrable" is the manufacturer's word, not a measured result, and we have not tested it
  • Still only seals the bottom — the corners and the frame sides are a separate job

Who this is forAnyone who has actually seen a mouse, rather than someone who just wants the cold air stopped.

A screw-on aluminum carrier with a reinforced rubber blade — the version of this part that survives a winter of a storm door slamming into it.

Where the number comes fromFrost King does not publish a numeric working range for this sweep. The 2-inch face and the rubber blade's projection put it in the quarter-inch-to-three-quarter-inch band once mounted; the blade must touch the threshold under light compression, not bend flat. What it does well

  • Screws, not adhesive — nothing to peel off in July
  • Cuts down with a hacksaw for a narrower door
  • The rubber blade is replaceable in practice; the carrier is what lasts

Where it fails

  • You are drilling into the door face — renters should look at an adhesive or slide-on option
  • No published gap range, so measuring first is not optional
  • The matte white profile vanishes on white trim and stands out on a stained or dark door

A vinyl blade on a slim aluminum carrier — quieter and tidier than rubber on a door that already sits close to the sill.

What it does well

  • Vinyl is quieter across a tile threshold than rubber
  • Brown finish disappears on a stained door

Where it fails

  • Vinyl hardens in deep cold and seals worse than rubber or silicone below freezing
  • Very little reach — useless on a large gap
  • No published gap range

A silicone blade on a strong adhesive strip — the sweep you use when drilling the door is not an option.

Where the number comes fromThe seller publishes 2" W x 39" L and no numeric gap range. The blade is trimmed to your gap on install, which is where the flexibility comes from: too little and it drags, too much and it does nothing.

What it does well

  • No holes, so no deposit argument at move-out
  • Silicone stays flexible far below freezing where cheap vinyl stiffens
  • Trims to width in one cut

Where it fails

  • Adhesive needs a clean, smooth, dry surface — it will not hold on a textured or freshly painted door
  • A door that gets kicked open will peel it eventually
  • No published gap range; you are sizing it by eye against your own gap

What we would skip, and why

Nobody in this category ever declines to recommend something. That is what makes universal praise worth ignoring. Here is what we would not buy.

  • Brush sweeps, for this job specifically

A nylon brush is the right answer to an uneven floor and the wrong answer to a mouse. Bristles part under pressure, which is exactly what a rodent applies. We recommend brush sweeps elsewhere on this site for exactly the case they suit — see best door sweeps — but if exclusion is the goal, a brush is not a barrier.

  • Slide-under draft stoppers and door snakes

A fabric tube resting against the bottom of a door can be pushed aside, and there is nothing holding it to the door. It is a genuinely good draft product and we recommend several in best door draft stoppers. As a pest barrier it is not one.

  • Any sweep sold on a rodent-repellent claim

Sweeps advertised as repelling rodents by scent, sound or coating are asking you to believe a claim with no test named and no conditions stated. Exclusion is a geometry-and-material problem: close the opening with something that cannot be chewed. We will not repeat a repellency figure nobody sources.

How we picked

  • Start from the published exclusion threshold — 1/4 inch, per UC IPM — and treat any gap at or above it as a way in, not just a draft.
  • Compile the published carrier material, blade material and mounting method from each manufacturer's own listing.
  • Eliminate anything whose seal parts under pressure, which rules out every brush sweep for this job regardless of how well it seals air.
  • Rank on whether the seal closes the gap AND resists gnawing, then on mounting suitability, then on price.
  • Say plainly where a pick is a draft part doing a pest job, because most of them are.

We have not tested these products and we do not claim to have. The full method, including what we refuse to claim, is on how we pick.

The corners are where this goes wrong

Fit any sweep, close the door, and look at the bottom two corners from inside with the lights off. On a great many doors there is still a visible triangle of daylight where the sweep's straight edge meets the frame's vertical line. It is small, it is easy to dismiss, and at a quarter inch it is a door.

  • Push fill fabric into each corner before you decide the job is done. This is the single highest-value five minutes on the page.
  • Caulk over it in any corner where it could be pulled back out from the outside.
  • Check the strike side of the frame too. A door that has dropped on its hinges opens a wedge down the latch side, and weather stripping closes that.
  • Do the garage while you are at it. The gap under a garage door is the largest opening on most houses, and the same 1/4 inch logic applies — see garage door bottom seals.

Timing, and why this page belongs on a draft site

UC IPM notes that where outdoor populations exist, house mice frequently enter homes in autumn, when nighttime temperatures start dropping. That is the same week you notice the draft. The cold and the mouse are arriving through the same opening for the same reason, which is why sealing it once, properly, does both jobs.

If the draft is what actually brought you here and the mouse is hypothetical, buy the good draft sweep and skip the specialist part. We would rather tell you that than sell you the expensive option you do not need.

Questions people actually ask

How small a gap can a mouse get through?
UC IPM's house mouse guidance states that mice can enter through openings as small as 1/4 inch. That is the number to measure your door gap against — at or above it, treat the gap as an entry point, not just a draft.
Do door sweeps actually keep mice out?
A sweep that closes the gap below a quarter inch stops a mouse walking in. Whether it keeps one out over a season depends on the material, because UC IPM notes mice will gnaw to enlarge an opening. A rubber or vinyl blade solves the geometry; a steel-wool-cored seal or steel wool fill in the corners addresses the chewing.
Will a brush door sweep keep mice out?
No. Bristles part under pressure, which is exactly what a rodent applies. Brush sweeps are the right choice for an uneven floor and the wrong choice for exclusion — buy a blade type for this job and make sure it contacts the threshold along the whole width.
Can mice chew through a rubber door sweep?
Xcluder, which makes rodent-rated sweeps, states that standard vinyl and rubber sweeps fail because rodents can chew through them. That is an interested party's claim, but it is consistent with UC IPM's point that mice gnaw to enlarge openings. If you have seen a mouse rather than just felt a draft, plan for the material and not only the gap.
What should I use to fill the gaps a door sweep cannot reach?
Steel wool is the material both UC IPM and the EPA name for plugging small holes, held in place with caulk. Stainless versions will not rust and stain a threshold. The corners at the bottom of the door frame are the usual culprits.
Is a rodent-proof door sweep worth the extra money?
If you have actually seen a mouse, yes — you are buying a seal built around a material that resists gnawing, which a draft sweep is not. If you are sealing for warmth and have no evidence of rodents, a good aluminum-and-rubber sweep plus fill in the corners does the job for less.
