Outlet gaskets are thin foam pads fitted behind a faceplate to seal the joint between the plate and the wall. They take two minutes per outlet and cost pennies each. They are genuinely worth doing on exterior walls and on walls shared with an unheated garage, and they do very little anywhere else.
This is the smallest fix on this site and the one most often exaggerated. It belongs on a list of things to do, not at the top of it. If you have not yet dealt with the doors and windows, do those first — the gaps there are an order of magnitude larger.
Find out whether yours actually leak
- 1Pick an outlet on an exterior wall on a windy day, or with a bathroom extractor running and the interior doors closed.
- 2Hold the back of your hand an inch from the faceplate. Cold moving air is unmistakable at that distance.
- 3Or hold a lit incense stick beside the plate and watch whether the smoke pulls toward it.
- 4Do a few around the house. On some houses every exterior outlet is a leak; on others none of them are, and you have saved yourself an afternoon.
Match the part to your gap
Measure at the widest point. Then read across. If your measurement sits on a boundary, take the larger band — a seal that is slightly too big compresses, and one that is too small does nothing at all.

Where the air is actually coming from
Understanding this is what tells you whether to spend more effort here. An electrical box in an exterior wall is a plastic or metal cup pushed through the drywall into the stud cavity. Air moves into the wall cavity from the attic or the rim joist, tracks down the cavity, and comes out through the gap around the box, the wire entry holes, and the slots in the box itself.
A faceplate gasket closes the last few inches of that path — the joint between the plate and the wall surface. It is the easiest part to reach and the smallest part of the leak. Sealing the box-to-drywall gap with caulk while you have the plate off does considerably more, and costs nothing extra since you are already there. The comparison is here.

What we would skip, and why
Nobody in this category ever declines to recommend something. That is what makes universal praise worth ignoring. Here is what we would not buy.
Outlet gaskets on interior walls
An outlet on a wall between two heated rooms is not connecting to anything cold. The gasket does nothing there except use up the pack. Do the exterior walls, the wall to an unheated garage, and anything on a knee wall or against an attic space — and stop.
Any gasket pack that does not state a fire rating
This is foam going behind an electrical faceplate. Frost King publishes a UL listing for its material; several cheaper packs publish nothing at all. It is a small point and it is the one spec on this page worth paying attention to.
Treating gaskets as a substitute for real air sealing
This is the honest one. An outlet gasket seals the joint between the faceplate and the wall. It does nothing about the much larger gap where the box itself meets the drywall, or the wire penetrations behind it. It is a genuine improvement and it is a small one — caulk and foam do the larger job.

Fitting them
- 1Switch off the circuit at the breaker.
- 2Unscrew the faceplate and set the screw somewhere it will not roll away.
- 3Push out the gasket's center section so it matches your plate type — duplex, toggle or rocker.
- 4Seat the gasket over the outlet or switch, flat against the wall.
- 5While the plate is off: run a bead of caulk in the gap between the box and the drywall if there is one. This is the two-minute upgrade that doubles the benefit.
- 6Refit the plate. Do the screw up snug, not tight — a compressed gasket seals, a crushed one bows the plate.
- 7Restore power.
Also fit the childproof plug caps on unused outlets on exterior walls if you have small children in the house anyway — they close the last small hole in the same path and cost almost nothing. That is a genuine side benefit, not the reason to do the job.
Questions people actually ask
- Are outlet gaskets worth it?
- On exterior walls and walls shared with an unheated garage, yes — they are cheap, take two minutes each, and close a real air path. On interior walls between two heated rooms they do nothing. They are also a small fix: doors, windows and the attic hatch are all larger.
- Why is cold air coming from my light switch?
- Air is moving through the wall cavity behind it — usually from an attic or rim joist — and escaping around the electrical box. The switch is not the leak, it is the exit. A gasket closes the faceplate joint; caulking around the box while the plate is off closes more of it.
- Do outlet gaskets fit rocker switches?
- Older foam packs are cut for duplex outlets and toggle switches only. If your house has modern rocker plates, buy a pack that publishes a rocker cut — the EVA-style multi-cut packs do.
- Can I use outlet gaskets on any wall?
- You can, but there is no point on an interior wall between two heated rooms. Spend the pack on exterior walls, garage-adjacent walls and anything backing onto an attic or crawlspace.
- Is foam behind a faceplate a fire risk?
- Buy a pack whose maker publishes a fire-retardant rating for the material — Frost King publishes a UL listing for its foam. Never pack a box with loose insulation, and never cover the outlet's own terminals.
